BILL NUMBER: S9161
SPONSOR: STEWART-COUSINS
TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend chapter 20 of the laws of 2009 amending the vehicle and
traffic law, the general municipal law and the public officers law
relating to owner liability for failure of operator to comply with traf-
fic control indications, in relation to extending the provisions of such
chapter
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this bill is to extend the authorization for the town of
Yonkers to operate a red-light camera ticketing program until December
1, 2029.
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1 of the bill amends existing law to extend the authorization
for the city of Yonkers to operate a red-light camera ticketing program
on city owned roads until December 1, 2029.
Section 2 is the effective date.
JUSTIFICATION:
The Legislature authorized the City of Yonkers, for five years beginning
in 2009, to install and operate red light cameras at up to 25 inter-
sections in order to enforce the law requiring drivers to obey traffic
control signals. This authorization has been extended twice since, first
in 2014 and again in 2019.
Reducing incidents of red light running also reduces a motor vehicle
crash which, in turn, improves traffic safety for all road users be they
drivers, passengers, pedestrians or bicyclists. This legislation extends
the authorization for Yonkers' red light camera demonstration program
for an additional five years, until December 1, 2029.
