BILL NUMBER: S8951A
SPONSOR: CHU

TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the highway law, in relation to installing zero-emission
charging and refueling station signs on New York state highways

PURPOSE:
The purpose of this legislation is to identify publicly available elec-
tric vehicle charging stations and installing services signs designating
the location of said stations.

SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1 amends section 88 of the highway law, adding new subdivision
12-creating a directional sign program that would provide information of
the presence of publicly available zero-emission vehicle charging and
refueling stations located within three miles of a roadway exit of off-
ramp; the installation of which would occur during the regular course of
maintenance for existing signate.
Section 2 sets the effective date.

JUSTIFICATION:
As New York works to transition from fossil fuel reliance to greener
energy, more New Yorkers are purchasing zero-emission and electric vehi-
cles (EV). For those who travel along New York highways, it is unclear
where these public charging stations are located. This legislation
directs the department of transportation to install general service
signs that designate the location of EV charging stations off highway
exits so EV drivers can quickly, and safely, identify where a charging
station is located.
