TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of
the state highway system as the "Michael J. Finerson Memorial Bridge"
 
PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:
To name a state bridge in the Village of Chaumont in honor of Sheriffs
Deputy Michael J. Finerson, who was killed in 1970 in the line of duty
 
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1 amends section 344-p of the State Highway Law to designate the
Bridge on route 12, in the town of Chaumont, as the "Sheriff's Deputy
Michael J. Finerson Memorial Bridge"
Section 2 Provides that the commissioner of transportation shall be
responsible for the installation and maintenance of-adequate signage
within such time and manner as they shall deem appropriate. Further-
more, provides that this designation shall be of a ceremonial nature so
as to avoid confusion and to limit any possible disruption of commerce.
Section 3 sets forth the effective date which is immediately.
 
JUSTIFICATION:
Jefferson County Sheriffs Deputy Michael J. Finerson was killed in the
line of duty September 9th, 1970. Deputy Finerson was ambushed when
entering a residence on Weaver Rd. in the Town of Watertown. Deputy
Finerson was at the residence to assist a female in removal of her
belongings when he was shot by the female's estranged husband. Finerson
returned fire, hitting the suspect, but he was fatally wounded. Deputy
Finerson gave his life to protect the citizens of Jefferson County. He
is not forgotten. Deputy Finerson's sacrifice and valor are remembered
and honored to this day throughout Jefferson County. It is only right
that his sacrifice be honored by the state, as his memory is properly
continued and appreciated.
