BILL NUMBER: S7974A
SPONSOR: HOYLMAN-SIGAL
TITLE OF BILL:
An act in relation to renaming the Christopher Street-Sheridan Square
subway station on the IRT Broadway-Seventh Avenue line the "Christopher
Street-Stonewall National Monument station"; and to provide for the
repeal of such provisions upon the expiration thereof
PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:
To amend the name of the Christopher Street-Sheridan Square station in
Manhattan to be "Christopher Street-Stonewall National Monument"
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section one directs the Metropolitan Transit Authority to rename the
Christopher Street-Sheridan Square subway station in Manhattan to
include reference to the Stonewall National Monument.
JUSTIFICATION:
Widely considered to be birthplace of the modern LGBTQ+ civil rights
movement, the Stonewall Inn was the site of a series of protests by
LGBTQ+ New Yorkers against police raids on gay and lesbian bars in
Greenwich Village. In 2016, President Barack Obama officially designated
Stonewall Inn a National Monument - the first national monument to
LGBTQ+ history in the United States.
With the addition of a new visitor center dedicated to LGBTQ+ history in
2024, Stonewall National Monument is a historic and inspiring destina-
tion for New Yorkers and tourists alike. It should be honored as such in
our transit navigation. This bill will expand the name of the Christo-
pher Street-Sheridan Square to subway station to refer to Stonewall
National Monument, both easing navigation to the monument and showcasing
New York's pride in its LGBTQ+ historical landmarks.
PRIOR LEGISLATIVE HISTORY:
