TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the education law, in relation to tuition assistance
program awards
PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:
The purpose of this bill is to increase the income eligibility threshold
of the tuition assistance program for independent single and married
students.
SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS:
Section 1 amends section 667 of the Education Law to increase the income
eligibility threshold of the tuition assistance program for independent
single students from.ten thousand dollars to thirty thousand dollars and
for independent married students from forty thousand dollars to sixty
thousand dollars.
Section 2 sets the effective date.
JUSTIFICATION:
With tuition rates higher than ever and inflation causing an extra
burden on New Yorkers, modernizing TAP will help struggling New York
students by increasing the maximum income eligibility for independent
single and married students and will help the many students who are in
need of financial assistance to attend college.
