TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of
the state highway system as the "Sgt Terry James Garigen Memorial High-
way"
 
PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:
This bill designates a portion of the state highway system as the
"Sergeant Terry James Garigen Memorial Highway"
 
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1 amends the highway law by adding a new section 344-p which
designates the state highway system constituting state route 77 between
Broadway road and Sumner Road in the town of Darien, county of Genesee
as the "Sergeant Terry James Garigen Memorial Highway"
Section 2 provides that the commission of transportation shall provide
for the installation and maintenance of ceremonial signage for the road-
way, but not changing the official name of the highway
Section 3 provides that the act shall take effective immediately.
 
JUSTIFICATION:
Sargeant Terry Garigen's lifetime of service began in 1969 with the U.S.
Army where he began a highly decorated combat tour in Vietnam. His
enlistment and training earned him the specialty of infantry rifleman
and a later succession in Combat Intelligence. Some of his many
distinctions include the Silver Star Medal and the Bronze State Medal.
He was also an employee of the Town of Darien from 1972 to 2010.
 
EFFECTIVE DATE:
The legislation would take effective immediately upon adoption.
