TITLE OF BILL:
An act directing the metropolitan transportation authority and the New
York city transit authority to rename the 23rd Street subway station to
the 23 St-Baruch College station; and provides for the repeal of such
provisions upon expiration thereof
 
PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:
This bill will rename the current "23rd Street Station" station to "23rd
Street Baruch College Station."
 
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1: Upon a determination by the Metropolitan Transportation
Authority or the New York City Transit Authority that sufficient funds
have been committed specifically for such purpose, the Metropolitan
Transportation Authority and the New York City Transit Authority shall
use such specifically committed funds to rename the 23rd Street subway
station to the 23rd Street Baruch College station. The MTA shall ensure
that all signs and any other items issued by the MTA are updated to
accurately reflect the new name of the station within ten months.
Section 2: This act shall take effect immediately.
 
JUSTIFICATION:
Baruch College, located in Manhattan's Lower East Side, has been a
pillar of the community since 1919. It is considered one of the nation's
leaders in social mobility with three quarters of enrolled undergradu-
ates filing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid and with over one
third of students being the first in their family to attend college.
Baruch offers degrees in business, arts and sciences, and public and
international affairs and is home to over a dozen academic centers and
institutes. As a central part of New York City's history for over a
century, Baruch College's importance deserves to be formally recognized
by the New York City Transit Authority's system.
