TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the public health law, in relation to requiring health
care professionals to prescribe opioid antagonists when prescribing an
opioid
 
PURPOSE:
Provides that when opioids are prescribed, the opioid antagonist shall
be made available as well.
 
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Amends subparagraph (i) of paragraph (b) of subdivision 3 of 2 section
3309 of the Public Health Law to require the prescription of an opioid
antagonist and discuss the dangers of opioid addiction with patients
receiving such medication.
 
EXISTING LAW:
Currently, medical professionals may prescribe such opioid antagonists.
 
JUSTIFICATION:
Making opioid antagonists readily available could help reduce the number
of deaths by overdose of opioids.
