BILL NUMBER: S5050
SPONSOR: LANZA
TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the penal law, in relation to protecting MTA workers
from harassment
PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:
This bill would protect MTA workers from assault and harassment.
SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS:
Section one amends section 240.30 of the penal law by adding a new
subdivision 3-a. Section three is the effective date.
JUSTIFICATION:
As Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) workers are on the front
lines serving the public they should feel safe doing their jobs and at
work. As outbreaks of crime are on the rise, MTA workers have not been
immune. This bill expands the list of protections to MTA employees to
include customer assistance personnel, signal system repairers, track
cleaners and supervisors. MTA workers provide a valuable service to the
public and get people to where they are going. These essential workers
should not be harassed and assaulted while doing their jobs.
