TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of
the state highway system as the "Private Sidney A. Scofield Memorial
Highway"
PURPOSE:
Designates a portion of the state highway system as the Private Sidney
A. Scofield Memorial Highway.
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1: Amends the highway law by adding a new section 345-b to read
as follows: Portion of the state highway system to be designated as the
"Private Sidney A. Scofield Memorial Highway". All that portion of state
route nine-D in the town of Fishkill, county of Dutchess, shall be
designated and known as the "Private Sidney A. Scofield Memorial High-
way."
Section 2: States that the commissioner of transportation shall provide
for the installation and maintenance of adequate signage of the state
highway system.
Section 3: States the effective date.
JUSTIFICATION:
The Town of Fishkill submitted resolution 2023-6 to request that a
portion of the New York state route nine to be designated as the
"Private Sidney A. Scofield Memorial Highway."
Mr. Scofield was a resident of the town of Fishkill when he enlisted in
the United States army at the outset of the Spanish-American war. He
was killed in action in Cuba on July 1, 1898 while charging up San Juan
Hill alongside Teddy Roosevelt.
He is buried in the Fishkill Rural Cemetery on the designated portion of
Route 9. The people of Fishkill wish to honor his bravery and sacrifice
with this designation.
