Existing law creates the Governor's Office of Workforce Innovation in the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. (NRS 232.965) Under existing law, the Office is required, in part, to establish and administer programs for pupils which support the development of the workforce in this State, including: (1) a Career Pathways Demonstration Program; and (2) a program to provide paid and unpaid work-based learning opportunities outside of school for pupils enrolled in grades 7 to 12, inclusive. (NRS 232.985, 232.990) Section 1 of this bill requires, to the extent that money is available, the Office to establish and carry out a program to place career coaches in middle schools and junior high schools. Section 1 requires that the program be designed to provide pupils enrolled in middle school or junior high school with information and guidance, inside or outside the classroom, for the exploration of career pathways and the development of knowledge, training and skills required for career readiness. Section 1 further: (1) requires the Office to collaborate with any appropriate persons or entities to establish and carry out this program; and (2) authorizes the Office to apply for and accept gifts, donations, grants or other sources of money and, within the limits of available money, to enter into contracts and award grants related to the program. Section 2 of this bill makes certain definitions applicable to the provisions of section 1.
