This memorial requests the Board of Nursing in New Mexico to convene a task force aimed at addressing the ongoing nursing shortage crisis in the state. The resolution highlights the critical need for nurses, noting that there are currently nearly 18,000 registered nurses, 1,300 licensed practical nurses, and 8,300 advanced practice nurses practicing in New Mexico. Despite recent funding for additional nursing school slots and faculty positions, enrollment and graduation rates in nursing programs have not kept pace with the demand, with a significant gap identified in the education necessary to meet workforce needs. The task force is expected to consist of representatives from various nursing organizations, educational institutions, and healthcare associations.
The task force will be tasked with identifying barriers to increasing nursing graduation rates and employee retention, and it will report its findings and recommendations to the appropriate interim legislative committees. Specifically, the report will address barriers to employment retention, nursing educational slot expansion, nursing school enrollment and retention, and provide recommendations to bridge the educational gap in nursing to meet workforce demands. Copies of the memorial will be sent to relevant stakeholders, including the Board of Nursing and legislative finance committee directors.
