This bill requests the Higher Education Department of New Mexico to convene a task force aimed at studying and developing recommendations for collecting data on parenting students within the state's higher education system. The task force will consist of representatives from various educational institutions, including four-year public colleges, two-year community colleges, a tribal college, and parenting students themselves, as well as members from the children's cabinet and the data advisory group of the Higher Education Department. The task force is tasked with defining "parenting student" and assessing the current status of data collection related to these students, ultimately aiming to implement standardized methods for tracking their educational outcomes.

The report produced by the task force will include recommendations for consistent data collection practices that assess parenting status throughout students' enrollment, such as integrating this data into the Higher Education Department's end-of-semester reporting. The task force is required to present its findings and recommendations to the legislative health and human services committee and other relevant legislative committees by November 1, 2026. Additionally, copies of the memorial will be sent to the governor and the secretary of higher education.
