This bill appropriates $250,000 from the general fund to the Board of Regents of the University of New Mexico for the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies. The funds are designated for year-round scholarships for the Curanderismo Traditional Medicine Institute and for statewide community outreach and engagement aimed at creating new courses for the institute. The scholarships will prioritize New Mexico residents, particularly those from rural, tribal, indigenous, or underserved communities, as well as individuals intending to provide culturally rooted health services within the state.

Additionally, the bill outlines that the outreach and engagement efforts will encompass a variety of activities, including courses, workshops, and informational sessions, while also fostering collaboration with community-based organizations and tribal governments. The Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies is tasked with researching and developing new courses on curanderismo traditional medicine to address the cultural and health needs of New Mexico communities. Any unspent funds at the end of fiscal year 2027 will revert to the general fund.
