This bill designates April 30 of each year as "Miguel Trujillo Day" in honor of Miguel Trujillo, a marine veteran and member of the Pueblo of Isleta, who played a significant role in securing voting rights for Native Americans in New Mexico. The new section added to Chapter 12, Article 5 NMSA 1978 emphasizes the importance of this day for the people of New Mexico to engage in community activities that promote education, celebration, and reflection on voting rights and indigenous leadership.
Additionally, the bill includes an appropriation of $75,000 from the general fund to the Indian Affairs Department for the fiscal year 2027. The funds are intended to develop and distribute educational materials about Miguel Trujillo, coordinate events with tribes and schools, and create resources to raise awareness of his contributions. Any unspent funds at the end of the fiscal year will revert to the general fund.
