The "Artificial Intelligence Government Use Act" mandates that public bodies in New Mexico establish comprehensive policies and training programs for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and automated decision tools. The bill defines key terms such as "artificial intelligence," "automated decision tool," and "consequential decision," and outlines the responsibilities of public bodies in creating policies that govern the authorized use of these technologies. These policies must address security procedures for protecting nonpublic data, ensure that a human employee makes final consequential decisions, and prohibit the misuse of AI tools to bypass security protocols.
Additionally, the bill requires public bodies to train their employees on cybersecurity policies and the appropriate use of AI and automated decision tools. The policies established by public bodies must be made available to the public upon request. The provisions of this act are set to take effect on July 1, 2026.
