The bill establishes a new special registration plate for the Albuquerque Isotopes baseball team, set to be issued starting January 1, 2026. Vehicle owners can apply for this plate for an additional fee of $35, along with an annual renewal fee of $25. The revenue generated from these fees will be allocated, with $12 from each initial fee going to the department for manufacturing and issuing the plates, while the remainder will be directed to the University of New Mexico's board of regents for the Carrie Tingley Crippled Children's Hospital.
Additionally, the bill includes a provision that allows the department to cease the issuance of the Albuquerque Isotopes special registration plates if, starting July 1, 2031, the number of plates issued and renewed falls below fifty percent of the average annual issuance from 2026 to 2031. This measure aims to ensure that the special plates remain popular and financially viable.
