The bill mandates that each local school board and governing body of a charter school in New Mexico must develop or adopt guidance aimed at promoting student safety in and around bodies of water. This guidance should include information on local options for age-appropriate swimming lessons and other water safety courses.
Starting in the 2025-2026 school year, public schools are required to provide this water safety guidance to the parents of each student either upon enrollment or no later than the tenth school day of the school year. The guidance can be included in a district-wide or school-specific handbook, but schools must obtain written acknowledgment from parents confirming receipt of the handbook.
