The bill amends the existing Rural Health Care Practitioner Tax Credit in New Mexico to expand eligibility to include licensed respiratory care practitioners and polysomnographic technologists. Specifically, it allows these newly included practitioners to claim a tax credit of up to $3,000 if they provide health care services for at least 1,584 hours in a rural health care underserved area during a taxable year. Additionally, practitioners who provide services for at least 792 hours but less than 1,584 hours are eligible for half of the tax credit amount. The bill also removes the previous mention of physical therapists from the list of eligible practitioners.
The new legal language specifies that respiratory care practitioners and polysomnographic technologists are now recognized as eligible health care practitioners under the tax credit program. The bill outlines the process for these practitioners to apply for the credit, which includes submitting an application to the Department of Health for qualification certification. The provisions of this act will take effect for taxable years beginning on or after January 1, 2025.
