This bill establishes a three-year Math Lab Pilot Project aimed at improving math proficiency among students in kindergarten through sixth grade. The project will create dedicated math labs in participating public schools, which will focus on hands-on activities and project-based learning. School districts that choose to participate must apply to the public education department, which will oversee the project, develop application criteria, and provide technical assistance. Each participating school district will receive a minimum grant of $100,000 per school to support the establishment and operation of the math labs, which must be staffed by qualified teachers and include professional development opportunities.

Additionally, the bill appropriates $3 million from the general fund for the implementation of the pilot project over the fiscal years 2026 through 2028. The funds will be used for staffing, instructional materials, technology, and required reporting. Participating school districts will be required to report demographic and proficiency data annually, and the department will evaluate the project's effectiveness, providing a final report to the governor and legislature by November 1, 2028. The provisions of this act will take effect on July 1, 2025.
