This bill amends the Enhanced 911 Act to enhance the capabilities of law enforcement agencies in responding to emergencies by requiring internet and wireless service providers to provide location information for devices used to make 911 service communications. Specifically, upon request from a law enforcement agency or a public safety answering point, these providers must supply location data for devices involved in 911 communications, particularly in situations that pose a risk of death or serious physical harm. The bill also establishes that service providers may create protocols for voluntarily disclosing this information and provides immunity from legal claims for those acting in good faith under these provisions.
Additionally, the bill mandates the Department of Public Safety to collect and disseminate contact information from all internet and wireless service providers operating in the state to facilitate these requests. It also includes amendments to existing definitions within the Enhanced 911 Act, such as changing "call" to "service communication" in various contexts, and clarifies the responsibilities and liabilities of local governing bodies and service providers in relation to enhanced 911 systems. The provisions of this act are set to take effect on July 1, 2025.
