The bill amends the Enhanced 911 Act to require wireless and internet service providers to provide location information for devices used to make 911 service communications upon request from law enforcement agencies. This information can only be requested for emergencies involving the risk of death or serious physical harm. Additionally, the Department of Public Safety is tasked with collecting and disseminating contact information from these service providers to facilitate such requests. The bill also establishes that service providers acting in good faith when disclosing location information will not face legal claims for doing so.
Furthermore, the bill modifies existing definitions within the Enhanced 911 Act, replacing terms like "call" with "service communication" to reflect the broader range of communication methods available, including internet services. It also clarifies that private listing subscribers waive certain privacy protections to allow their information to be used for 911 service communications and emergency responses. The effective date for the provisions of this act is set for July 1, 2025.
