This bill mandates that all members of the boards of regents of state educational institutions and the governing boards of other public post-secondary educational institutions in New Mexico complete ten hours of training within the first six months of their terms. The training will cover various topics, including the New Mexico constitution and state laws related to education, financial management, student success services, institutional governance, and ethics. The Higher Education Department is tasked with developing and providing this training, as well as monitoring compliance and maintaining records of each member's training completion.
The provisions of this act apply to all newly appointed members of the boards and current members who have at least one year left in their terms after the act's effective date. Current members are required to complete the training by December 31, 2025. This initiative aims to enhance the knowledge and effectiveness of board members in overseeing state educational institutions and ensuring accountability in their governance.
