This bill amends the Law Enforcement Protection Fund to provide additional funding for certified law enforcement training at state-supported community colleges and certain institutions of higher learning. It establishes new funding allocations, including a provision that allows western New Mexico university, branch campuses of institutions of higher learning, and state-supported community colleges to receive $100,000 for faculty salaries, instructional materials, and related course expenses for certified law enforcement training. Additionally, it modifies the distribution rates for various police departments and agencies, increasing the amounts allocated to municipal, school district, and university police departments, as well as county sheriff's departments.
The bill also updates the expenditure limitations for the fund, allowing for the use of funds for faculty salaries and benefits, instructional materials, and related course expenses for certified law enforcement training. It maintains the requirement for the peace officers', New Mexico mounted patrol members', and reserve police officers' survivors fund to have a minimum balance of $350,000 through fiscal year 2023 and $1,000,000 thereafter. The effective date for the provisions of this act is set for July 1, 2025.
