A MEMORIAL
RECOGNIZING THE TWO HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE NUESTRA SENORA DE DOLORES CATHOLIC PARISH IN MANZANO, NEW MEXICO.
 
     WHEREAS, 2023 marked the two hundredth anniversary of the
founding of the nuestra Senora de Dolores Catholic parish in Manzano, New Mexico; and
     WHEREAS, native people lived in the Estancia valley for centuries before European contact; and
     WHEREAS, the area is the site of the historic Salinas missions, which included the three missions of Abo, Quarai and Gran Quivira; and
     WHEREAS, Hispanic settlers have used the Estancia valley for grazing livestock since 1703; and
     WHEREAS, settlement of the area began in the 1800s, when residents of the town of Tome and Valencia county petitioned the Spanish and Mexican governments for land grants in the area; and
     WHEREAS, nuestra Senora de Dolores Catholic church was erected in the community of Manzano beginning in 1824; and
     WHEREAS, the church played an important role in the establishment of the Manzano land grant-merced, which was granted on December 24, 1829;
     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that nuestra Senora de Dolores Catholic parish be recognized on its two hundredth anniversary; and
     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the board of trustees of the Manzano land grant-merced and the nuestra Senora de Dolores Catholic parish.
