This bill amends existing New Jersey law regarding personal injury protection (PIP) coverage for automobile insurance by requiring insurers to notify policyholders that Medicare and Medicaid cannot be used as primary coverage for medical expense benefits. The bill specifies that insurers must provide this notice in plain language at three key times: when the option for health insurance coverage as primary is offered, between 15 and 60 days before a covered person turns 65, and annually upon policy renewal for those aged 65 and older.

Additionally, the bill clarifies that while insured individuals can opt for other health insurance coverage to serve as primary for medical expense benefits, they cannot select Medicare or Medicaid for this purpose. This change aims to ensure that policyholders are fully informed about their coverage options and the limitations of Medicare and Medicaid in relation to PIP benefits, thereby enhancing transparency and understanding of personal injury protection insurance.
