This bill mandates the Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner to contract with an appropriate entity to conduct a feasibility study aimed at enhancing the operations of the Office in Southern New Jersey. The study will assess the need for a regional medical examiner facility, including factors such as facility size, staffing requirements, and the potential for on-site forensic testing services. Additionally, it will explore collaboration with local medical schools to develop educational initiatives, including a forensic medical examiner fellowship program and enhanced training for medical students and law enforcement personnel.
To support this initiative, the bill appropriates $40,000 from the General Fund for the feasibility study. The Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner is also required to submit the findings and recommendations from the study to both the Governor and the Legislature. This comprehensive approach aims to improve the medical examiner services in the region while fostering educational opportunities in forensic sciences.
