This bill amends R.S.46:14-6.1 to authorize members of the State Legislature to perform all functions of a notary public, including taking acknowledgments and proofs. Previously, only specific officials such as attorneys, notaries, county clerks, and certain federal and state officials were permitted to perform these functions. The bill adds a new subsection that explicitly includes members of the State Legislature among those authorized to take acknowledgments or proofs.
Additionally, the bill allows legislators who validate documents to affix a raised seal indicating their authority to perform such validations, although this is not mandatory. The seal, which will feature the State Seal, will be provided by the State Treasurer upon request and must be returned when the legislator leaves office. The validation performed by a legislator will carry the same legal weight as that of a notary public, ensuring that their notarizations are recognized as valid.
