This bill establishes a grant program within the New Jersey Department of Health (DOH) aimed at enhancing the early detection and intervention for uterine fibroids. The Commissioner of Health is tasked with distributing grant funds to organizations that conduct research on uterine fibroids, develop public awareness campaigns, and implement various strategies to improve screening and treatment. The bill outlines specific activities eligible for funding, including advanced gynecological imaging, patient navigation services, and research on disparities in pain management related to uterine fibroid treatments. Grant recipients are required to report on their use of funds, and the Commissioner must provide annual reports to the Governor and Legislature detailing grant activities and outcomes.
Additionally, the bill creates the Uterine Fibroids Prevention Fund, a nonlapsing, revolving fund managed by the State Treasurer, which will support the grant program with an appropriation of $5 million from the General Fund. The Commissioner of Health, in collaboration with the Commissioner of Banking and Insurance, is also directed to evaluate and recommend policies to ensure coverage for uterine fibroid screening and treatment under state-regulated health plans within one year of the bill's enactment.
