This bill amends the definition of "commercial motor vehicle" under the New Jersey Commercial Driver License Act by revising the minimum passenger capacity threshold. The current law defines a commercial motor vehicle as one that is designed to transport eight or more but less than 16 persons, including the driver, for hire on a daily basis to and from places of employment. The bill changes this threshold to specify that a vehicle is considered a commercial motor vehicle if it is designed to transport 15 or more passengers, in addition to the driver.

Additionally, the bill removes the provision that classified vehicles designed to transport eight or more but less than 16 persons, including the driver, as commercial motor vehicles if used for daily transportation for hire. As a result of this change, individuals will no longer be required to possess a commercial driver license (CDL) to operate vehicles designed to transport fewer than 16 passengers, including the driver. This amendment aims to clarify the definition and potentially reduce the regulatory burden on operators of smaller passenger transport vehicles.
