The Clean Oceanfronts, Amusements, Safety, and Tourism Act (COAST Act) is designed to prepare New Jersey's coastal regions for the anticipated influx of visitors during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is expected to generate significant tourism revenue. The act establishes the COAST Fund, which is appropriated $2.5 million to support a public awareness campaign aimed at enhancing beach safety, promoting environmental protection, and boosting tourism and hospitality in eligible coastal municipalities within Atlantic, Cape May, Monmouth, and Ocean Counties. The campaign will include bilingual signage, educational resources, and increased lifeguard support, all intended to create a welcoming and family-friendly atmosphere while preserving the natural beauty of the Jersey Shore.
The public awareness campaign will focus on several key areas, including safe swimming practices, environmental cleanliness, and promoting local businesses in connection with World Cup events. The Department of Environmental Protection, in collaboration with other state departments, will oversee the campaign and seek additional funding through partnerships with private entities and nonprofit organizations. The act mandates annual reports to evaluate the campaign's effectiveness, with the first report due one year after the World Cup. The COAST Act will take effect immediately and will expire two years after the conclusion of the World Cup, although the campaigns and resources may continue as deemed necessary by the department.
