This bill mandates the New Jersey Transit Corporation (NJT) to implement safety features at bus stops located in high-traffic areas. Specifically, when NJT installs a new shelter at such bus stops, it must equip the shelter with safety features, including barriers and lighting, to enhance the safety of passengers waiting for motorbus service. The bill defines a high-traffic area based on factors such as average traffic volume, collision frequency, and proximity to locations with high pedestrian activity.

Additionally, the bill stipulates that upon request from a municipality or entity responsible for a pre-existing shelter in a high-traffic area, NJT is required to install similar safety features at those locations. The corporation is also encouraged to collaborate with municipalities or entities to share costs associated with these safety enhancements. The act is set to take effect seven months after its enactment.
