This bill mandates that hotels, motels, rooming and boarding houses, and similar lodging facilities verify the identity of guests and residents by checking valid government-issued identification at check-in. The identification can include a valid driver's license, passport, identification card, or REAL ID. The bill also requires these establishments to maintain a register that records the names and addresses of guests, their dates of arrival and departure, and the rooms they occupy. This register must be kept for at least one year after the guest or resident has departed.
The primary aim of this legislation is to enhance security and reduce anonymous check-ins, which can help combat human trafficking. By ensuring that lodging facilities verify the identity of their guests, the bill seeks to create a safer environment for both guests and the community. The provisions of the bill will take effect on the first day of the second month following its enactment.
