This bill amends the existing law regarding the New Jersey Black Cultural and Heritage Initiative Foundation, changing its name to the New Jersey Black Heritage Foundation. It reduces the board of trustees from 25 to 12 members, decreasing the number of public members from 19 to five, while adding the Governor or their designee as a member. The term of office for public members is extended from three years to five years, and all members representing State partner organizations will also serve five-year terms. The bill also mandates that the board employ an executive director and submit an annual funding request to the Governor and the Office of Management and Budget.
Additionally, the bill establishes an annual appropriation of $500,000 for the foundation's operations, which will be funded through both raised and appropriated funds. It clarifies that the foundation will not incur any liability or obligation on behalf of the State and will not be represented by the Attorney General. The foundation is tasked with promoting and supporting Black arts, history, and culture in New Jersey, with specific duties outlined to enhance community engagement and financial viability.
