This bill mandates that boards of education for school districts and boards of trustees for charter schools or renaissance school projects that employ surveillance systems with artificial intelligence capabilities must adopt a comprehensive policy regarding their use. The policy must include details about the surveillance system, the type of information collected, how the information will be utilized, and how access to this information will be managed in accordance with state and federal laws. Additionally, the policy requires the posting of signage in visible areas to inform the public that such surveillance systems are in operation.
Furthermore, the bill stipulates that the policy must comply with existing laws related to video surveillance systems and mandates that it be distributed to the parents and guardians of students. The definition of artificial intelligence is also provided, encompassing technologies that perform tasks typically requiring human intelligence. The act is set to take effect immediately and will apply to the first full school year following its enactment.
