This bill proposes an increase in the filing fees for property tax assessment appeals submitted to county boards of taxation in New Jersey. The fees have not been adjusted since 1979 and will be raised according to a new schedule based on the assessed valuation of the property under appeal. Specifically, the fee for properties valued at less than $150,000 will increase from $5 to $25; for properties valued between $150,000 and $500,000, the fee will rise from $25 to $75; for properties valued between $500,000 and $1 million, the fee will increase from $100 to $150; and for properties valued at $1 million or more, the fee will go from $150 to $200. Additionally, the fee for reclassifying property will increase from $25 to $75 per parcel, and appeals not related to assessed value or classification will also see an increase from $25 to $75.
The bill also clarifies that no filing fee will be required for appeals contesting the denial of certain deductions, such as those for veterans or senior citizens. Furthermore, it stipulates that all fees collected will be managed by the county tax administrator and treated as county revenue, in accordance with existing provisions. The changes aim to modernize the fee structure and ensure that it reflects current economic conditions.
