This bill amends N.J.S.18A:62-25 to extend the eligibility for tuition benefits to the dependents of members of the United States Armed Forces who died while on active duty, in addition to the existing provisions for the dependents of members of the New Jersey National Guard. The current law allows children or surviving spouses of these service members to attend public institutions of higher education in New Jersey tuition-free for up to 16 credits per semester, provided they meet certain conditions. The bill specifically replaces the previous language that limited eligibility to those who completed Initial Active Duty Training and were killed in the performance of their duties.
Additionally, the bill introduces a new provision that grants eligible students a monetary award equal to 10 percent of the cost of tuition at their enrolled public institution. This award is intended to assist with non-tuition education costs, such as housing, dining, fees, or supplies. The act is set to take effect immediately and will apply to the first full academic year following its enactment.
