This bill mandates that all state, county, and municipal law enforcement agencies in New Jersey establish a pregnancy policy for female law enforcement officers who have completed their entry-level probation. The policy requires officers to notify their immediate supervisor upon confirmation of pregnancy, who will then inform the chief law enforcement executive. Officers are allowed to continue working in their usual full-duty status until they and their physician determine otherwise, and they cannot be forced into maternity duty or leave without a compelling medical or public safety reason. The bill also outlines the conditions under which a pregnant officer may be reassigned to maternity duty, which includes nonhazardous tasks and prohibits certain high-risk activities.

Additionally, the bill allows for modifications to uniforms for pregnant officers and exempts them from mandatory handgun qualification requirements until they are certified for full-duty status. Evaluations by the agency's physician are limited to reviewing medical records and consulting with the officer and her physician, without routine examinations for pregnancy-related matters. Upon returning from maternity leave, officers must meet with their commanding officer, provide medical documentation, and assist in identifying any individual needs, including lactation accommodations. The commanding officer is responsible for conducting a reintegration interview and developing a tailored reorientation program for each returning officer.
