This bill mandates the Commissioner of the Department of Veterans Affairs to conduct a two-year study assessing the outcomes and efficacy of the veteran to veteran peer support helpline, known as the vet to vet hotline. The study will analyze national suicide data alongside data collected from the helpline and will focus on various aspects, including the helpline's effectiveness in promoting sustained mental health regimens, its visibility, and its role within the department's mental health care services. Additionally, the study will evaluate how sustained mental health care impacts suicidality, the helpline's effectiveness in crisis situations, and its overall efficacy in preventing suicides and repeated attempts.

Upon completion of the study, the Commissioner is required to submit a written report to the Legislature detailing the findings within six months. Furthermore, the bill allows the Commissioner to propose legislative improvements to enhance the efficacy of the veteran to veteran peer support helpline based on the study's results. The act is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
