This bill mandates that all school districts in New Jersey incorporate age-appropriate bullying awareness and prevention education for students in grades preschool through 12. This instruction is to be integrated into the districts' implementation of the New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Comprehensive Health and Physical Education. The curriculum will cover various aspects of bullying, including definitions, types (such as physical, verbal, social, and cyberbullying), the permanence of social media posts, ways to seek help, and the potential consequences for perpetrators. Additionally, the education will aim to foster awareness and sensitivity regarding how bullying can be intensified by intolerance towards individuals of different races, ethnicities, religions, sexual orientations, genders, or abilities.
To support this initiative, the Commissioner of Education is tasked with providing school districts with age-appropriate sample learning activities and resources. The bill is set to take effect immediately and will first apply in the first full school year following its enactment.
