This bill mandates the establishment of a Human Trafficking Unit within the New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety, led by the Attorney General. The unit will consist of one or more assistant or deputy attorneys general, with one designated as the Human Trafficking Coordinator. The unit's responsibilities include prosecuting human trafficking cases, assisting counties in investigations and prosecutions, providing victim support information, collaborating with various state departments and agencies, and conducting public awareness campaigns to educate the public about human trafficking.
Additionally, the bill requires the Attorney General, in consultation with relevant commissioners, to develop and approve a training course and curriculum for law enforcement and county prosecutors focused on human trafficking case handling and prosecution. This training will be reviewed and updated every two years. The Human Trafficking Coordinator is also tasked with providing an annual report to the Governor and the Legislature detailing the unit's activities and any suggested legislative improvements.
