The resolution establishes the New Jersey Diversity in Law Enforcement Task Force, aimed at studying and enhancing diversity and community representation within law enforcement agencies across the state, including state, local, and municipal police departments. Recognizing the critical role law enforcement plays in maintaining public safety and order, the resolution highlights the importance of officers reflecting the communities they serve to foster trust and effective community relations. Despite ongoing efforts to diversify, many agencies still lack adequate representation, which can hinder their ability to build strong community ties.
The task force will consist of 13 members, including representatives from the Senate, General Assembly, the Attorney General's office, various law enforcement associations, and community organizations, as well as public representatives from both urban and non-urban areas. The task force is tasked with examining current diversity data, identifying effective strategies for increasing representation, and developing actionable recommendations. They are required to submit a final report to the Governor and Legislature within one year of their formation, after which the task force will dissolve.
