This bill establishes the New Jersey Forensic Science Laboratory at Rutgers University-Camden, aimed at providing essential crime investigation services to the southern region of New Jersey. The laboratory will offer real-time testing in various forensic disciplines, including fingerprinting, firearms identification, forensic toxicology and chemistry, trace evidence, DNA identification, and forensic anthropology. Additionally, it will collaborate with external partners to conduct research, develop public policy, and create educational opportunities for students.
To support the establishment and operation of the laboratory, the bill appropriates up to $500,000 from the General Fund to reimburse the laboratory for incurred costs. Furthermore, the laboratory is mandated to submit a report to the Governor and the Legislature within two years of its establishment, detailing its research, activities, and future priorities, including any additional resource needs.
