The bill establishes the State Seal Task Force in New Jersey to review and potentially update the State seal, which was originally adopted in May 1777. The task force will consist of 11 members, including the Secretary of State, the Commissioner of the Department of Community Affairs, representatives from the New Jersey Historical Commission and the Division of Travel and Tourism, as well as members appointed by the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the General Assembly, and the Governor. Notably, at least two of the public members appointed by the Governor must be high school students, and those under 18 will need parental permission to participate.
The task force is tasked with studying the current State seal to determine if it accurately reflects New Jersey's present and future. This includes reviewing the seal's history, analyzing demographic and industrial changes since its creation, assessing its inclusiveness, and considering potential redesigns. The task force is required to hold public hearings and will report its findings and recommendations to the Legislature and the Governor within 18 months of its initial meeting. The task force will dissolve after submitting its report.
