This bill mandates that each public board of education in New Jersey adopt a comprehensive policy focused on student suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention. To aid in this process, the Commissioner of Education is required to develop a model policy that boards can reference while creating their own tailored policies. The development of these policies must involve consultation with various stakeholders, including school and community members, mental health professionals, and suicide prevention experts. The policies must specifically address procedures related to prevention, intervention, and postvention, as well as recognize the needs of high-risk groups.
Additionally, the bill outlines definitions for key terms such as prevention, intervention, and postvention, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and reducing suicidal behavior, responding to suicidal actions, and providing support after a suicide attempt or incident. Each board of education is also required to post their suicide prevention policy on their website and inform students, parents, and guardians about its availability. The act is set to take effect immediately and will be applicable in the first full school year following its enactment.
