The bill establishes a three-year Gun Court Pilot Program in the Superior Court of Mercer County, aimed at addressing the increasing peril posed by the use of guns in violent crimes. The program will be administered by the Administrative Office of the Courts, which will have the authority to refer any criminal case involving a gun or dangerous weapon to the specialized court. Judges assigned to this court will possess extensive knowledge and experience in criminal law, procedure, and sentencing, particularly concerning violent crimes.

Additionally, the Administrative Office of the Courts is tasked with monitoring the Gun Court and providing reports to the Legislature at specified intervals—12 months after the program's initiation and within six months after its conclusion. These reports will assess the impact of the pilot program on criminal sentencing, court calendars, and workloads, as well as evaluate its overall effectiveness and make recommendations regarding its continuation or expansion. The act is set to take effect three months after enactment and will expire three years thereafter.
