This bill mandates the Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner to contract with an appropriate entity to conduct a feasibility study aimed at enhancing the operations of the Office in Southern New Jersey. The study will assess the need for a regional medical examiner facility, including factors such as facility size, staffing requirements, and the potential for on-site forensic testing services. Additionally, it will explore collaboration with local medical schools to establish educational programs related to forensic medical examination and death investigation. The study will also identify any necessary legislative or administrative actions to implement its recommendations.
To support this initiative, the bill appropriates $40,000 from the General Fund to the Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner for the feasibility study. Upon completion, the Office is required to submit the study's findings to both the Governor and the Legislature. This effort aims to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of medical examination services in the southern region of New Jersey while fostering educational opportunities in forensic sciences.
