This bill allows graduating students from public and nonpublic schools, institutions of higher education, and proprietary institutions licensed to offer academic degrees in New Jersey to request that their diplomas reflect their preferred names. Importantly, students will not be required to provide legal documentation to demonstrate a legal name or gender change to use a preferred name. However, schools and institutions retain the right to deny such requests if the preferred name is intended to misrepresent identity, avoid legal obligations, harm the institution's reputation, or is deemed derogatory or inappropriate.

Additionally, the bill mandates that schools and institutions update a former student's records upon receiving sufficient documentation of a legal name or gender change. Acceptable forms of documentation include a state-issued driver's license, birth certificate, passport, social security card, or court order. Once proper documentation is provided, schools must reissue any documents, such as transcripts or diplomas, with the updated legal name or gender, although they may charge a nominal fee for this service.
