This bill mandates that the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) develop and produce a specific sign to be affixed at all entrance points of electric vehicle battery facilities that have electric vehicle batteries on-site. The sign must include a symbol indicating the presence of electric vehicle batteries, a warning statement, and any additional symbols or information deemed necessary by the DEP to convey potential hazards. The DEP is also tasked with creating a distribution procedure for these signs to ensure compliance across the state.
Beginning 18 months after the bill's effective date, owners or operators of electric vehicle battery facilities will be required to display the sign at each entrance. Failure to comply will result in civil penalties ranging from $100 to $250 for each offense, with each day of continued violation counting as a separate offense. The bill emphasizes the importance of notifying first responders about the presence of electric vehicle batteries and their associated dangers, thereby enhancing safety protocols in emergency situations.
