This bill amends the Overdose Prevention Act to mandate that each county health department in New Jersey maintain a reserve stock of opioid antidotes. This reserve is intended to ensure that law enforcement agencies, emergency medical response entities, schools, and hospital pharmacies have uninterrupted access to these critical medications. The quantity of opioid antidotes to be stored will be determined by the county health department director in consultation with local authorities, including the county prosecutor and associations of police and fire chiefs.
Additionally, the bill allows these entities to request an interim supply of opioid antidotes from the county health department if they anticipate exhausting their current stock before receiving a new supply. Upon such a request, the county health department is required to promptly provide the necessary interim supply. Entities receiving this supply must reimburse the county health department for the actual costs incurred. The bill also permits county health departments to enter into shared service agreements to facilitate the acquisition of opioid antidotes at reduced costs.
