This bill mandates that the New Jersey Transit Corporation (NJT) provide discount fares for specific groups of individuals utilizing its services. The eligible groups include elementary and secondary school students, full-time college and university students, full-time workforce training program participants, individuals receiving benefits from the Work First New Jersey program, and newly employed individuals who meet certain criteria. These criteria for newly employed individuals include commuting to work using NJT services, having a starting salary at or above the state minimum wage, being at least 18 years old and not a full-time student, working a minimum of 20 hours per week, having been unemployed for at least 30 days prior to employment, not currently receiving public assistance from Work First New Jersey, and being a resident of New Jersey.

The bill aims to enhance accessibility to public transportation for students and individuals in workforce development programs, thereby supporting education and employment initiatives in the state. It is designed to alleviate financial burdens associated with commuting for these groups, promoting greater use of NJT services. The act is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
